RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
